Ultimate


Today started at 0635 for me. The alarm rang, and as usual I turned it off and went back to bed. I struggled out of bed at about 7 and left for school. Chapel. T(art) class. Break, then results. Oh, and I found out during break that Malcomn was short listed for Commandos! He was half way between trembling in fear and bursting with pride. All the best man!

Results. Some were good; I improved in Chem. Most were bad though. I was sort of expecting it. I got a total of 30 out of 42 points, and I have to say that I’m mostly disappointed. Today I made a point to work loads harder for the prelims and all the other IAs coming my way. So yeah. Hopefully we’ll see better grades in the future.

I spent the day, which was for most part devoid of lessons trying to figure out the finishing touches on my EE. In the process, I realized that Choir/Dance FOA tickets are selling faster ACSi pratas.

Today we also had a friendly game with Hwa Chong’s Ultimate team. In all honestly, I left my class room half expecting to lose. By God’s grace, we won the game quite comfortably. 13-4 or something like that. I have to say that I’m proud of the team. I love the fact that you guys gel so well and are just a really fun bunch of people. Y’all really put in your best efforts and it showed. Through God’s strength we did an great job, (although there’s obviously lots that we have to improve on), and that was definitely the highlight of the day for me!

I went for dinner afterwards, and showed up for prep really late. Its a good thing that Madam excused me.

Tomorrow, I need to hand in my final EE draft. Get some math work done and figure out my world lit assignments.

It seems that when I talk to people, the conversation often strays into the holidays and school work, which would have me go on and on about how much work I have, and how hard it is, and how much I hate doing work during the school holidays, and how much… The list goes on. And I have realized, quite frankly that I’m a bit of the world’s biggest complainer. At the end of the week gone by, I can honestly say that I have been blessed much more than I have given God credit for.

Theater Arts rehearsals have been fun, I’ve been learning how to waltz. I’m learning loads, and the t.arts, all of them are a great bunch to hang out with. Its always nice going out for dinner after rehearsals, the last time we went to this Japanese place, which was cheap, but really good. But its not so much about the food, although good food is always loved, its the company that I’ve been blessed with. And its not just the t.arts, but my other friends as well, although, I have had less chances to hang out with them.

I have also went to the beach to play Ultimate with this group of people who call themselves the B.U.Ms, which I think stands for beach ultimate maniac. It was really fun, and definitely good training. Running on the sand is tough. It has been a really long time since I went for pick up, perhaps almost a year ago, with the church people at a mimosa covered field in Tanah Merah, which I think is now being converted into a condominium.

In other news, I have at least got started with my business IA and my EE. By God’s grace these things have been worked out for me.

This week was very much blessed and eventful.

On Sunday evening, long after many of you die hard Harry Potter fans finished the latest book in the series, and unabashedly spoiled the ending for me, I read the first few chapters of Deathly Hallows. And what an extreme roller coaster it turned out to be. When the ride got to the big twist and turns, it struck me how J.K Rowling had managed to sneak the clues into all the books from the very start of the series- many of which I never fully understood, and in one pensive chapter enlighten all who followed the series. Going through the final moments of the epic series, I found her writing emotionally gripping and nothing short of brilliant.

The ending? I’m not going to spoil it.

Expelliarmus!

Along with that passing obsession, this week was pretty enjoyable. In Theater Arts class, we learned the basics of Kathakali dance, which was surprisingly more interesting to learn than to watch in video form. For those of you that don’t know, Kathakali dance productions go on for an average of 8 hours, and that’s loads of time to try and figure out what the codified hand signs mean.

Ultimate training on Monday was fun, the one on Thursday was fun as well but somehow also functioned as breeding ground for injuries. A couple had discs chucked in their faces, and I while playing barefoot, got my right big toe twisted to angle that it wasn’t made for, and had to shift it back to it proper place by hand. And yes, it did hurt.

Please pray for me to heal up quickly, I still want to be able to do the Charity BikenBlade.

Tomorrow, I’m probably going with the Theater Art people to watch the Greek play, Agamemnon.

I write this with my IOP presentation (which I’m supposed to be working on) opened in the background. In an effort to take quick occasional breaks from my work, I’ll post my weekend here, so please excuse any incoherence.

Friday was the much awaited, final installment of Anglo Olympics: Ultimate Frisbee. Anglo Olympics is an inter class competition in which junior classes team up with their senior classes to compete in a few sports; the overall winner get the Anglo Olympics trophy. The reason why this was “much awaited” was because the event had been postponed like 7 times, for varying reasons, the primary culprit among them: bad weather. Before the event started, the heat was blistering, and you could almost smell the melting rubber of the artificial turf (well not quite, but it was still hot); but just as the starting whistle was about to be blown, the sky turned gray and threatened to rain.

Dwayne, Charles and I, together with members of the senior class represented 5.11 and 6.11. By God’s grace, the weather was good through out: the rain occasionally came for short spells then left quickly, until the the end of the finals, when it poured (wet Frisbees are hard to catch); and we got 3rd! We had loads of fun, Charles learned to throw and catch a Frisbee, all in all, a sweet end to a good week.

Saturday morning was an early one, I got up to cycling with the training ride of the Charity Bike n Blade. Once more by God’s grace, it was fun and I’m still in one piece; for those of you that don’t know, I’m really afraid of riding on busy roads especially those with the heavy vehicles charging at their maximum speed limit. The traffic was light that morning, except for this one stretch of road near Tampines where there so many of those huge machines that might for all I know be Optimus Prime in disguise. There are some really nice drivers on the road that leave lots of room between cyclists and their cars, and give way to them; but there are some, especially those that carry soil and what not, to and from construction sites, that just for the sake of doing so, come really dangerously close to cyclists. These people, they ought to be thrown in jail for a couple of days to teach ‘em a lesson.

Anyway, the IOP, which is basically a presentation on Literature texts, is entitled: “the pursuit of Happiness”, some how or other, watching the brilliant film starring Will Smith and his son, inspired me to do something like this. The phase, is taken from the line “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” which is a line in the Declaration of Independence. I’m going to end here leaving you with an inspirational quote from this historic document.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
